Design in Our Lives Reaction

Every person has different meaning of a word art and a design. Even though these words mean the same thing or it can be different. In my definition of art or the design is that having a talent or passion or desires shouldn’t go to waste. So I believe that art is having a passion to form a design in one’s work. If any work is well-thought-out of having an up and down, it is known as “ergonomics”. The term “ergonomics”, comes from the Greeks which mean “work” and “natural laws”. According to Wikipedia, “Ergonomics is the study of designing equipment and devices that fit the human body, its movement, and its cognitive abilities.” This passage means that the term “Ergonomics”, has an influence in our body whether it’s the effort or any maneuvers that can fit to any homo sapiens. It can be functionally known as the high or low objects that can be determined by practical or the object that it’s have been perceived.

During on our second field trip, it was at MoMa exhibit “Talk To Me” on the 3rd floor. No one thought that the museum was going to be exciting with the stuff that is amazing to see. One thing I saw that it really amazed me, was the “Talking Carl”. Carl, the animated red box created by Yann Le Coroller-French, b.1969, was funny which can make you smile when you sad by looking at his face. He does amazing stuff like, repeats what a person says in high voice. He also reacts when a person is tickling, poking in the eye or sneezing; he repeats what you have done. He can be known as low functional, but in any circumstances he might also be known as the high function. If he was living thing like us he definitely will know as the high functional.

Another example of low functional would be an object of “BIX Communicative Display Skin” by Jan Edler & Tim Edler in 2002. The object describes the brightness with the ring of a single pixel in energetic. Therefore, it doesn’t help us at all but we can say that this is “low functional”.

What is a high functional? An image of “Square 2010” by Jack Dorsey, a petite square that devoted with the head phone plugged in, to permit anyone who wants to pay by credit cards rather pay by cash. This is a good example of high functional, because today we still use credit cards when we don’t have enough cash. The credit card is a type of replacement for the cash payments.

Finally, how can we forget the work by Emily Read and Chen HSU? They made a painting of “Homeless City Guide”. This was created in 2007 for the homeless people to talk about their neighbor. This was done by having symbols which now is made in sidewalks. Even though, this is a good example of high functional because it helped us to read without difficulty and comprehend it.

Peculiar objects of high and low functional can be biased. This can be distinguishing how the object is. While I was noticing the contrast between high and low functionality, this can interrelate with a homo sapiens from machine to individual. For example, the “Square 2010” and “Homeless City Guide” both related to functionality, it can be said that this piece of art be used in our daily life’s instead of other objects which are low functional objects. Therefore, I believe that these low functional objects cannot be used in our lives.

  1. Ahsan,
Although I loved "Talking Carl," I do concur with the statement that the application has low functionality.
